Type of Cold Room: Multi-Room Food Production Facility

Working alongside a select group of contractors in a group design effort, Scandia brought together insulated coldrooms, a freezer and hygienic spaces across a substantial food-production layout, with a distinctive Himalayan salt-wall feature in the ageing coldroom.

Specifications

  • Project Type: Bespoke insulated coldrooms, freezer and hygienic spaces across a food-production facility.
  • Rooms: Spaces for hanging meat, boxed products, poultry storage and preparation, ageing, cooked products, holding and outgoing goods, plus a sausage chiller and boot-wash areas.
  • Panels: PIR insulated wall and ceiling panels with white food-safe PVC laminate finishes; most rooms at 2.7m external height, with a taller hanging coldroom, bulk-storage freezer and higher sections for taller machinery.
  • Doors: Manual sliding doors to larger openings, hinged and personnel doors elsewhere, and a dedicated insulated reveal for a meat rail passing through a doorway.
  • Details: Insulated column linings, food-grade coving, flashings and protective corner details.
  • Freezer Floor: Heater mat, insulation and reinforced concrete to accept heavy-duty forklift traffic and high-load pallet racking.
  • Interfaces: Stainless-steel perimeter trim supplied to accommodate the resin contractor’s cove; floor finishes by the appointed resin contractor.

Client Requirement

The scheme required a coordinated approach to room sizes, ceiling heights, doorways and the surrounding circulation areas, creating defined spaces for the different activities within the facility. For a project of this scale, the relationship between rooms matters as much as each individual enclosure, with door types and openings selected for their location and intended use.

Our Solution

The arrangement combined cold storage with adjoining preparation areas and corridors. The panel layout responded to the equipment and building, with columns incorporated into the scheme and the insulated enclosure, floor levels, thresholds and finishes designed to meet as a coordinated installation with other trades. Together the total site layout, operational flow, access details and finishes demonstrate Scandia’s ability to manufacture and install bespoke insulated spaces across a wider food-production facility.
