Although often overlooked, dairy coldrooms differ to ordinary general purpose coldrooms.
For coldrooms and refrigeration the main two products which are stored in specific style of rooms are cheese and milk.
Milk, from the convenience store, to the supermarket, to the wholesaler, to the dairy, are all mainly stored on manoeuvrable trollies. These trollies, when stacked full can amount to a heavy load putting pressure and reducing the longevity of ordinary coldroom floors. When designing and manufacturing a milk coldroom, we keep in mind and allow for ample reinforcing to the flooring, increased door width to allow for ease of trollies, and take note of the height that the uprate of floor internally may decrease.
Cheese is stored normally, however by manipulating and selecting certain refrigeration equipment coldrooms can be successfully built to be cheese maturation chambers.
All of our coldrooms are made to measure and designed for each purpose providing infinite flexibility in creating dairy storage or cheese maturation environments. Using our own dedicated manufacturing facility and access to a huge range of refrigeration equipment, we can tailor designs suitable to requirements.
Door locations and types, room dimensions to suit trolley arrangement, refrigeration selections, flooring options are all fully customisable and discussed with the customer from the point of enquiry.
PIR insulation
The most popular and accepted insulation thickness for storage rooms.
80mm high-density CFC free PIR foam injected into 0.5mm hot lacquered white food safe laminated steel. U-Value W/M2K = 0.25. Available for panel lengths, spans and heights for up to 5000mm.
When insurers are involved, or down-the-road energy saving is in the customers’ mind many opt for 100mm thickness for their dairy rooms.
100mm high-density CFC free PIR foam injected into 0.5mm hot lacquered white food safe laminated steel. U-Value W/M2K = 0.20. Available for panel, spans of 6000mm and heights for up to 7000mm.
When at a wholesale or dairy distribution level often sizes need to be on an industrial scale. Rooms are then designed with 150mm PIR panels.
150mm high-density CFC free PIR foam injected into 0.5mm hot lacquered white food safe laminated steel. U-Value W/M2K = 0.13. Available for panel lengths, spans and heights for up to 8000mm.
Flooring Options
Plywood reinforcing underneath floor overlays are opted for when abnormal static, pedestrian or trolley load is operated within the room. Where floor levels are raised, external and internal ramps are available.
Where shelving is full with heavy load, there is light trolley circulation or abnormal level of pedestrian traffic inside the room it is common for customers to opt for a 9mm or 12mm plywood insert between the insulation and the suitably chosen overlay. This increases the longevity and durability of the floor of the coldroom. The common overlay for this floor is either a 2mm aluminium chequerplate covering, or customers opt for an altro finish by their own chosen supplier.

Where common medium weight milk trolleys are in circulation inside the coldroom it is recommended that an 18mm plywood insert is bonded between the insulation and the suitably chosen overlay. This increases the longevity and durability of the floor of the coldroom. The common overlay for this floor is either a 2mm aluminium chequerplate covering, or customers opt for an alto finish by their own supplier.
Where an abnormal rolling or static load such as pallets and pallet trucks are stored and operational within the coldroom 25mm plywood reinforcing between the insulation and the overlay. Our ‘pallet floors’ stand the test of time and using strong bonding adhesive and correct installation methods our floors do not lose shape over time. The most common overlay for this floor is a 4.5mm aluminium chequerplate floor covering.
Aluminium overlay
Any overlay for an insulated floor is important to consider. The thickness and type is customisable to each room’s application. Where floor levels are raised, bespoke made external and internal ramps can be manufactured in each overlay for ease of access.
Our 1.5mm anti-slip aluminium overlay is our most common floor overlay for general purpose coldrooms. This overlay is never coupled with plywood reinforcing, as it is only for shelving and pedestrian use. Instead it is bonded to the insulated panel itself. The 5-bar pattern is intentionally specifically smaller to suit restaurants, pubs and retail outlets with an ‘easy-clean’ design.
Where light rolling loads are in action, or for a more industrial premises, 2mm aluminium anti-slip overlay is suitable due to its additional thickness it can increase longevity and durability of the coldroom floor.
Suitably coupled with 25mm plywood for heavy trolley and pallet use, this option stands the test of time for general purpose coldstores with industrial circulation.
